Interview

In Conversation with BTQ Rehearsal Director Jayden Grogan

What inspires you to teach?

I teach to pay forward what I am learning and discovering from my eclectic experiences and ever-passionate mentors.

I believe as a teacher, coach, and mentor that I have a responsibility to provide holistic educational training, and time-tested practices that develop individual identities.

How long have you been part of BTQ?

In 2018, I performed my inaugural guest role as Prince Erik in Tim Brown’s The Little Mermaid.

I returned to guest in Snow White as King Frederic, in Cinderella as The Jester, and as Mad Hatter/Director in Alice in Wonderland.

What are you most looking forward to in this new role?

Since coming on as Rehearsal Director for Alice in Wonderland I’ve enjoyed creatively assisting Clare in her intricately layered choreographic processes.

It’s a privilege to work alongside the marvellous creatives and now with the talented teaching team at BTQ.

I hope to play a significant positive role in transforming young dancers into young artists as they strive towards an elite level in their performance.

What do you wish your younger self knew about ballet/dance?

To cultivate your uniqueness as a human being within your dance training.

As a long term strategy this self-discovery-mode allows you to become curious, productive, and fulfilled throughout any creative processes and ultra useful for working collaboratively.

Three things being an artist has taught you?

Finding a trusted mentor and/or community of practice is extremely valuable as a young artist. Designing a dynamic system for yourself based on the experiences of others with more knowledge, understanding, and experiences encourages you to have increased agency and choice making in your own career pathway.

Become inspired and integrate your inspirations into your own practice in your own way. There’s always more to discover about yourself, other people, and the world around you.

Build a unique talent stack that bridges complementary skills and allows you to be adaptable to new situations.
