Choreographing Alice

Choreographer Clare brings the golden age of Hollywood to life in Alice in Wonderland, drawing inspiration from the effortless elegance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

What initially drew you to the 1930s as the setting for this ballet?

What initially drew me to the 1930s as the setting for this ballet was the undeniable allure of the Golden Age of Hollywood. It was a period when cinema was not just entertainment; it was spectacle, glamour, and innovation all at once. What especially fascinated me was how dance became such an integral part of that era’s storytelling.

Are the dance styles of the 1930s influencing the choreography?

I’ve definitely drawn inspiration from the music and dance styles that defined 1930s cinema—especially jazz, swing, and tap. Starting from a classical base has given the choreography structure and clarity, but layering in the rhythmic energy and stylised movement of that era has opened up exciting new possibilities.

There’s a real thrill in discovering how those influences—so full of personality and flair—can live within the language of ballet, creating something that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
